Abdirashid Ali Shermarke
Abdirashid Ali Shermarke was a prominent Somali politician who served as the Prime Minister of Somalia from 1960 to 1964. He was the first person to hold this position after the country gained independence. Shermarke played a significant role in shaping the early political landscape of Somalia, focusing on national unity and development.
In 1967, Shermarke was elected as the President of Somalia, becoming the first Somali leader to be elected by popular vote. His presidency was marked by efforts to modernize the country and improve education and infrastructure. Tragically, he was assassinated in 1969, which led to a military coup and significant changes in Somalia's governance.
