16th Street Baptist Church
The 16th Street Baptist Church is a historic African American church located in Birmingham, Alabama. It was established in 1911 and became a significant site during the American Civil Rights Movement. The church served as a meeting place for activists and leaders advocating for racial equality.
On September 15, 1963, the church was the target of a tragic bombing by members of the Ku Klux Klan, resulting in the deaths of four young girls: Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley. This event drew national attention to the civil rights struggle and highlighted the violence faced by African Americans in the South.
