The Khmer Rouge was a radical communist movement that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Led by Pol Pot, the regime aimed to transform the country into a classless agrarian society. This involved the forced evacuation of cities, abolition of money, and the establishment of collective farms.
During its rule, the Khmer Rouge implemented brutal policies that resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million people, through executions, forced labor, and starvation. The regime targeted intellectuals, professionals, and ethnic minorities, leading to widespread suffering and devastation in Cambodia.
